Introduction:
The Hiltner Combustion Systems gas engine test facility is located in Ferndale Washington. The facility has been developed to allow state of the art testing and development services intended to compliment simulation and analysis work at HCS. Three engine test cells are currently available covering a range of engine sizes from 50 kW to 1250 kW. The HCS machine shop serves primarily to support engine installation and instrumentation, while HCS maintains excellent contacts with world class machining operations capable of fabricating custom pistons, camshafts and other engine hardware.
Capabilities:
Each of the HCS test cells can be operated using a range of gaseous fuels including pipeline natural gas, propane, and gas mixtures, either premixed or blended on site. The cells are equipped with state of the art low speed and high speed data acquisition systems. Twelve channels of high speed data, including cylinder pressure, manifold pressure, etc. can be captured and processed in real time. Low speed instrumentation includes research grade fuel flow measurement and five exhaust gas emissions measurement.
HCS Specific Systems:
In order to support the advanced HCS engine development approach, a number of specially designed systems are available in the test lab. These include single cylinder research engines with the associated air system and control system hardware, as well as boosted air supply systems for multi-cylinder engines that greatly reduce combustion and air system development time. Each engine test cell is equipped with an in-house rapid prototyping engine control system, capable of quickly implementing and testing control schemes for production engines, new concept engines, and a full range of aftertreatment systems. |
